In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Midi School, the first stop of the "New Voices On The Road" series kicked off in Beijing in mid-August 2023. GoalBlue continued its public welfare collaboration with Midi, promoting the message of "Smart Eating, Balanced Meals, and Zero Food Waste" while advocating for a low-carbon, sustainable consumption pattern and responsible lifestyle. The goal is to encourage people to adopt a sustainable lifestyle for both the planet and themselves.
According to the latest Food Waste Index Report from the United Nations Environment Programme, an estimated 931 million tons of food were wasted globally in 2019 by households, restaurants, and the food service and retail sectors. This food waste accounts for 17% of all food available to consumers. The environmental, social, and economic impacts of food loss and waste are significant. Research shows that when considering waste throughout the food supply chain, the greenhouse gas emissions related to food waste contribute to 8-10% of total global emissions.
As global climate issues become increasingly severe, China is playing a growing role in global climate governance. China has committed to peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, with the 14th Five-Year Plan prioritizing a green lifestyle transformation. Reducing food loss and waste is often overlooked as a means of cutting greenhouse gas emissions. By doing so, people can not only save costs and reduce hunger but also help combat climate change. Reducing food waste is a win-win approach for advancing China’s ecological civilization.
GoalBlue has always advocated for a low-carbon diet based on balanced meals, reduced red meat consumption, and minimizing food waste, all to help reduce carbon emissions and address climate change. By targeting youth and integrating sustainable living ideas with the popular culture they enjoy, GoalBlue aims to bring low-carbon, sustainable dietary habits and lifestyles into the daily routines of young people. It encourages today’s youth to focus on healthy eating and become responsible consumers, for both the planet and themselves. Practical steps include reducing unnecessary food purchases, choosing seasonal and local ingredients, cooking smaller portions, and adopting the "N-1 dining principle"—ordering one less dish than the number of diners.
As China’s first major original outdoor music festival, Midi has been running for 30 years with a core goal of engaging as many young people as possible. Through its platform, the festival promotes responsible and positive values in society, encouraging China’s youth to pay attention to social issues and develop a sense of social responsibility. The collaboration between the festival and public welfare initiatives helps more of the public, especially young people, realize that low-carbon sustainability is not a distant, abstract concept. It is present in our daily lives, closely tied to our every action. Even a small change in daily habits can help alleviate environmental pressure and protect our blue planet.
During this Beijing event, GoalBlue set up a special booth, promoting sustainable, low-carbon living through interactive activities. Festival-goers were encouraged to make smarter, healthier, and more environmentally friendly food choices while reflecting on the impact their daily habits have on the climate and environment.
